Treating Narcissistic Pathology with Dr Otto Kernberg

This special training brings together three of the field's most distinguished contributors: Otto Kernberg, Frank Yeomans, and Diana Diamond. The programme will open with a review of levels of narcissistic pathology and an understanding of that pathology based on contemporary object relations theory.

The second part of the program will summarise transference focused psychotherapy, an evidence-based psychoanalytic psychotherapy for personality disorders, and illustrate how the technique is applied in the therapy of patients with narcissistic personality disorder. Diana Diamond will contribute her expertise on attachment, personality functioning, and the therapeutic process, while Frank Yeomans will then guide participants through the clinical tasks and technical considerations involved in establishing effective treatment with complex patients.

In the third segment, Dr. Otto Kernberg will discuss a clinical case, offering participants a unique opportunity to observe the diagnostic and conceptual thinking that has shaped contemporary approaches to personality disorders and psychotherapy. 

Participants will examine contemporary approaches to understanding personality pathology and personality organisation, while gaining practical skills in conducting comprehensive evaluations, discussing diagnosis with patients, managing risk, and formulating treatment goals. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between assessment and intervention, and how early therapeutic exchanges can shape the trajectory of treatment.

Through clinical illustrations, case material, and discussion, participants will explore how clinicians can establish a framework that supports reflection, emotional regulation, therapeutic engagement, and psychological growth. The programme will also consider the ways in which difficult dynamics emerge early in treatment and how these can be addressed productively to strengthen the therapeutic process.

While relevant to clinicians from a range of therapeutic backgrounds, the training will focus on demonstrating how these principles are integrated and applied within Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), one of the leading evidence-based treatments for personality disorders.

Dr Aner Govrin

Aner Govrin is a psychoanalyst, philosopher and clinical psychologist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is the director of the doctoral track, 'Psychoanalysis and Hermeneutics', at Bar-Ilan University and is a member of Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He is the series editor of the Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis book series, author of How Philosophy Changed Psychoanalysis (2024), Ethics and Attachment (2018), Conservative and Radical Perspectives on Psychoanalytic Knowledge: The Fascinated and the Disenchanted (2015), and Conversations with Michael Eigen (2003). He is also editor of The Routledge International Handbook of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy (2024) and Innovations in Psychoanalysis (2019). His two forthcoming book, Interpretation - A Contemporary Intrioduction and The Craft of the Psychodynamic Case Study: A Practical Guide, will be published by Routledge.

Dr Frank Yeomans

Dr. Yeomans is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical College, Director of Training at the Personality Disorders Institute of Weill-Cornell, and Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. He is president of the International Society for Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, an Honorary Member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and past Chair of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Committee on Psychotherapy. He was a founding member of Emotions Matter and served on the Board of that BPD advocacy organization before moving to his current position on the Education Committee,

He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, his PhD in French Literature and his MD from Yale University, and his psychiatry residency training from New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center Payne Whitney Clinic.

Awards include the UCLA Department of Psychiatry Distinguished Psychiatrist Lecturer (2015), the Weill Cornell Department of Psychiatry Arnold Cooper Honorary Lecturer Award (2021), Doctor Honoris Causa, Universidad de Valparaiso (2022), and the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry Kenneth Silk Lecturer Award (2023).

Dr. Yeomans’ primary interests are the development, investigation, teaching, and practice of psychotherapy for personality disorders. He headed the specialized unit for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder at the Weill Cornell Medical Center for ten years. He has taught and helped establish training programs for the psychodynamic therapy of personality disorders in many countries. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles and books, including A Primer on Transference-Focused Psychotherapy for the Borderline Patient; Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations; and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: A Clinical Guide, all co-authored with Drs. John Clarkin and Otto Kernberg. His most recent books are: Treating Narcissistic Pathology with Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, co-authored with Diana Diamond, Barry Stern, and Otto Kernberg; and Otto Kernberg: A Contemporary Introduction, co-authored with Diana Diamond and Eve Caligor.

Dr Diana Diamond

Diana Diamond, Ph.D. is Emerita Professor in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the City University of New, and Senior Fellow at the Personality Disorders Institute, at Weill Cornell Medical College where she has helped to develop a psychoanalytic approach to treating patients with borderline and narcissistic personality disorders (TFP). She is also adjunct professor at NYU Postdoc where she did her psychoanalytic training and is faculty at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and Society (NYPSI). She has published numerous articles in the areas of attachment and psychoanalysis, gender and sexuality, narcissism as a social and psychological phenomenon and psychoanalytic approaches to understanding narrative and symbolism in cinema.

She is the author of five books, most recently Treating Pathological Narcissism with Transference Focused Psychotherapy (Guilford Press, 2022) and she received the Aaron Stern distinguished visiting professor award from Weill Cornell Medical College for her contributions to understanding the etiology and treatment of narcissistic disorders. She co-chairs the APsA DPE (Department of Psychoanalytic Education) research education committee, is an editorial associate at the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), and on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Psychology. She teaches and supervises internationally and currently has supervision groups in Los Angeles, New York, Israel and China. She is in private practice in NYC and Sag Harbor, NY.
